Screw kindness. People are scum, they will almost NEVER reciprocate, there is NO satisfaction in helping out a bunch of basement-dwelling jerkoffs. I gave away items instead of merching them at numerous points, figured 100 something gold for a nice item was a waste and someone could probably make good use of it. I was deluding myself into thinking that more than .1% of the people in this game GIVE A FLYING FIG about anyone but themselves.
Seriously, this Christmas, be a grinch, tell the other players to go earn it themselves. Quit deluding yourselves. You want appreciation for good deeds, Guild Wars is not the place to find it. Nothing but greed and schadenfreude in this game... but then it IS a COMPETITIVE online RPG, not an MMO.
I've given up on dealing with other people, that whole "7 heroes" thing is sounding pretty good about now.

One time i saw a guy asking for a few bones, and i ended up giving him an entire stack. He was so surprised, but happy.

It's not the most random but it's the kindest thing someone's ever done.
Basically i've played the game solo, never really chatted with anyone, just basically played it with my friends, however one day i finally decided i wanted to buy a sword, FDS to be specific.
So i went to ascalon city and went into the party search and advertised what i wanted to buy, not too long after a guy enters and shows me the sword, and asks me for an offer, now being the noob that I am and not knowing the prices, I only had 603ish gold, not knowing how much it cost i told him i only have 600 gold, he said merry christmas and accepted my offer.
I'm still not sure how much they cost but i remember seeing some prices of 3k or more, and the sword i was going to upgrade to cost 750 from the NPC.
Whoever it was, thanks alot, i still use the sword, and i'm still pretty much a noob.

I offer free ferries to random people when I carry characters over in different campaigns, when I run my guildies through let's say, Zen Daijun, I usually take random people and run for free. I also give stuff away when I don't use them, or sell them with huge discounts to my friends when the item is still worth something - I know they'd pay the full price, but no way I'd charge a friend full price, lol...
And the people I know do the same for me. I get free runs, free items and stuff with huge discounts.
As for the totally random, I had a guy giving me some shield mod for free when I was sitting in Kamadan. He was giving away a lot of stuff too O_o... asked him if he wanted something, he said no, that he was just glad getting rid of them. Made me pretty happy .

yeah, every time im sitting in LA or kamadan trying to sell something and i see "such and such has achieved some random hard to get title. the gods have extended their blessings", if its a hard to get title (like legendary cartographer, skill hunter, and i have a screenie of someone getting legendary defender of ascalon) i PM them and congratulate them. its the nice thing to do, i never really thought of it as a choice, i just do it. as for other things, now and then when i get a max gold that is worth selling, i always ask my alliance mates if any of em need it before i go and sell it. i had a friend give me a max, perfect yadda yadda FDS to my warrior when she was just starting out and on great northern wall, and i still use it to this day. also, i had someone give me a free run from ascalon to LA one time, i tipped them nicely for their time though. Good one. Couldn't even give away a max purple r9 storm bow, or a max r9 15/50 FDS without being bitched at because they aren't inscribable.
The few things I was able to give away were appreciated, but I got the impression they were waiting for something like this.

I got given an ilyanna's staff on the first mesmer I made by a random ranger. Ended up deleting that mes, gave the staff to a guy in a guild led by a friend (which now leads our alliance), but then he got pissy over some random stuff and left the guild.
Also got a gold shortbow, although high req when I first started playing my ranger on GNW when I found a necro and a warrior doing it at level 20, and they agreed to help me when I randomly asked them.

I dont know about nicest one thing.
I have given away low level greens - they are useless to higher levels and take up storage space we dont have enough of.
I have caught people asking odd questions in Pre and given them a full tour, while collecting their armor upgrades and explaining how to get more out of their Pre experience. And where to find their trainers.
I refuse to take money for opening the Northlands for someone working on LDoA.
I have given away major greens that I had no use for - and when I get something that is more appropriate to my character than a green they are using - I will give that away too. (Selling takes hours away from productivity and gives back nothing in return. Make more selling crafting materials than golds - and that is 2 years ago, not recent. Wont ever bother with it again.)

Since there's already a thread around for doing nice things for others at the moment (at least for this time of year!), I'll talk about nice things that people have done for me rather than what I do for others.
-Right after my guild joined an alliance, they gave me 2 monk greens when they noticed my monk using a collector's staff
-A guy walked up to me in Kamadan and said he loved my Mesmer's armor (and now we talk just about every day so I made a friend, too!)
-Someone gave me a trick or treat bag a couple of days ago in Ascalon (a very nice necromancer)
-My stepson gives me dye and runes sometimes (he gave me some loot for my birthday because he couldn't afford a present in real life).
-Someone from these forums did a giveaway based on answering trivia questions and gave me some really neat stuff.
Those are the ones I can think of offhand anyway.

I'll usually give away anything that I'm not going to use. There are exceptions of course. Like when I try to give, say, a gold axe to someone and they get all suspicious. They say things like "what's the scam?" and "how much do you want for it?" and then they find it hard to believe that I'm giving it away for free, so it must be some kinda scam. Say I've got a gold axe, I'll go into the starting areas (ascalon, shing jea, kamadan) and I'll start to pm low level warriors asking them if they use an axe. Then after 5 or 10 minutes of being unsuccessful at geting someone to accept my hospitality I give up and merch it. I would say that at least 90% of the time I'll end up merching it just because it takes too long to find someone to give it too for free. And I'm not about to send out a general message of "Hey free stuff here!" because then I get level 20's running over and opening trade windows with me...... Like the guy in fissure armor really needs my free gold axe.....

I've been helping lower level characters do the Wintersday quests and giving away free skale fins to people doing Feast of Bokka.
The quests require killing so many skale that I actually can't keep up with the amount I'm giving away -- I have more fins than ever!

Probably the nicest thing i've done in GW. And most recent,
Well I just went two 2 Districts in LA and two in Kamadan spamming i'm Santa. I got three other people to use elf tonics and stood on the stairs saying Santa is here, free presents...
I got an organized line and just started handing out anything from greens, to unid golds, dyes, etc. It was really fun and I gave out Ecto, a Black Dye, and Obi Shards to my 3 helpers. It was mostly just a fun way to cleanout my storage, but nice never the less.
LA 1st Time:
(first run so people were confused and really nice)
Kamadan 2nd Time:
(2nd run and people were rude and kept going on other characters )
LA 3rd Time:
(People were nice and confused again. But not as good as the first run)
Maybe i'll do it next year.

dont you just love the "wonderful" replies you get when you tell someone that the item you offered them FOR FREE is worth a good amount of money? "OMFG SO SRRY THOUGHT THESE WERE MURSAAT TOKENS LUL"
even if someone offers you a couple of tanned hide squares, you THANK THEM ANYWAY. its like people who bitch at a runner who dies ONCE and hes running for tips anyway, goodness me, people sure are ignorant these days.
